John spends most of this letter reminding recipients of Jesus Christ and how they’re knowledge of Him should anchor them in the midst of trying times. In this passage, he spells out who God is; starting with His love for them and how it was perfectly manifested in Jesus Christ. In light of this, John not only invites disciples to receive this love for themselves but to extend it to their neighbors. Put simply, to “love, because He first loved us.”
